The voice work for the Darkness and summoned creatures are quite good and the comments can be quite amusing. You can easily find this game in the bargain bins and for what you'll pay for it, it's worth it. I wish the developers had explored the powers a bit more because using them is really what makes the game fun. What were you expecting.
I'm not sure why there are so many complaints about the controls, they seemed very basic and easy to pick up. You even get a power and a darkling that does the work for you. You meet certain characters and can immediately guess their fate. I mean, really. The voice acting is also good though unless they are pivotal to the plot, many characters just repeat generic comments. The story is based on the graphic novel series (though I'm not familiar with them) and it's unique in that you're a mob guy that is suddenly possessed by demonic powers but it can also be incredibly predictable at times.
The graphics are good, most notably the backgrounds but often characters speak without their mouths moving, including the main character. There are also a few really goofy comments made periodically and sometimes the main character is a bit over the top though again, maybe that is true to the comics. The Darkness powers are the saving grace of the game, though some are far more useful than others. If your biggest issue is the fact that you use the L2/R2 buttons instead of L1/R1 to fire your guns, get over it and move your fingers a fraction of an inch. The game managed to hold my interest throughout and while it certainly has it's fair share of flaws, I still found it to be fun. The Darkness has a creative concept though sadly the developers didn't capitalize on it as well as they could have. Mob ventriloquists, I guess.
Also, for those complaining about having to knock out the lights.the game is called The DARKNESS.
I didn't enjoy this game at all, i would waste my money on it if i had the choice again. The gameplay isn't too fun, at first its ok, but then
why.Don't waste your time and money on this game. The world is empty, and enemies are just wandering around. It seems like they didn't finish it. Random portals where you summon creatures from don't make sense, they're placed in the sidewalk. -Bad controls-Uninvolved storyFun premise, but overall is a failure to me. I sold my copy on ebay. It seems like everyone walking on the sidewalk is just there to shoot you, seems so stupid and unrealistic.
Mainly the game is just boring and shooting out all the lights gets old really fast. Furthermore, the game doesn't work well as a shooter and the Darkness aspect of the game, which is what makes it unique, is difficult to use and really not that interesting. Fortunately, I paid less than $10 for it but even then it's not worth it. This game had an interesting premise but it failed to capitalize on it. We're never given important elements of the story and the main character just seems wrong. I wasn't able to finish the game because I lost interest.
This goes down as one of the funnest games I have ever played. The games boards and graphics vary from playing in the streets, to going to many different parts of hell, to riding in a car, train, tank, to graveyards, to flashbacks, to restaurants, to demons on your arms working in your favor in different ways, to demons you can summon and have fight as a separate character on your behalf while you play too. Other games I'd give 5 stars too liked Drakes Uncharted, The Condemned 2, Jericho, Silent Hill, Bioshock.Since I'm not going to give a play by play review of the game maybe the games I mentioned help you understand my rating system. This game is perfect. I loved playing this game so much that I almost wanted to beat it twice. You play as a member of the mafia (so the story line stays serious; as it should be) who is trying to save himself.
